Winter Program in English Language Study for Non-Native Speakers and International Students

UMass Boston is pleased to offer during Wintersession 2010 a full-time day program of study in English for non-native speakers. This short, intensive English language experience can serve as an introduction to the spring session of either the University Preparation or Intensive English Programs, or as an intensive English program in its own right. This two-week session is designed to accommodate students at all levels of English proficiency.

For participants at the beginner and low-intermediate level, coursework will include instruction in and intensive practice of the basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. There will also be formal grammar study at the appropriate level and pace, and exercises in vocabulary building.

For advanced and high-intermediate level participants, coursework will include, in addition to assigned readings and exercises, preparation of an oral presentation. Work on a written report will support and extend the oral presentation project. Students, in consultation with their instructor, choose the topics that they wish to explore. Computer lab time is scheduled, and students are offered instruction in creating presentations and doing web-based research.

Class meetings

Classes take place daily Monday through Friday, mornings and some afternoons, for a total of 20-24 hours per week.
