About Dr. Margaret McAllister
Dr. Margaret McAllister is a family nurse practitioner (FNP) with an interdisciplinary PhD in Law, Policy and Society. The focus of her doctoral studies was on the study of implementation of prescriptive authority for nurse practitioners in Massachusetts. Dr. McAllister received her PhD from Northeastern University and holds a Clinical Specialist degree in Nursing from Indiana University where she completed a Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Faculty Fellowship in Primary Care. She holds a Master’s degree in Nursing Education from New York University and Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Ohio State University. She is an experienced FNP who coordinates the UMass Boston College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CONHS) FNP program with a focus on urban family health. Dr. McAllister has served as a Massachusetts State representative to the American Academy of Nurses Practitioners and now serves on its Board of Directors. She is a member of the U Mass Boston, Urban Mission Committee, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and Community Campus Partnerships for Health, and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF), where she serves as a national consultant for the organization. She is an accreditation site visitor for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. She is a Fellow of the Amercian Academy of Nurse Practitioners and was a US Department of Health and Human Services Primary Health Care Policy Fellow in 2003. Dr. McAllister is on the editorial advisory board to the Medscape on line Journal for Advance Practice Nurses and the Journal of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She served as past president of Theta Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau and has served as the advisor to Graduate Nursing Organization. Dr. McAllister is on the staff of the UMass Boston, University Health Services where is practices as a family nurse practitioner and co chairs the quality assurance committee. Most recently Dr. McAllister received the Massachusetts Coalition of Nurse Practitioners Distinguished Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award for 2004 and was the 2004 recipient of the Theta Alpha Chapter Excellence in Teaching Award.
Dr. McAllister’s current research involves patient’s knowledge base of potential life threatening adverse drug effects, and conducting a study on the mental health curriculum content in nurse practitioner programs.
