Admissions - Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I apply?
- You can download an application from the UMass website at www.umb.edu/admissions/graduate/ or call 617.287.6000 and request a graduate studies bulletin. In the back of the publication you’ll find an application.
- What do I need to submit when I apply?
- Application and fee, official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended both graduate and undergraduate with a minimum GPA of 3.0. and 3 letters of recommendation – at least one from a supervisor and at least one from a college instructor. Letters of recommendation should speak to your potential for success as a graduate student and as a teacher.
- When do I need to apply?
- In order to apply and be accepted in time to register for the spring, you must apply by November 1st.
- In order to apply and be accepted in time to register for the fall, you must apply by April 1st.
- Can I take some classes before I am admitted to the program?
- You can transfer in as many as two of the program’s 3 credit courses with approval from the graduate program coordinator, but you must apply and be accepted into the program before taking a third course.
- Can I transfer in courses I have taken at another university?
- You can transfer in up to two classes from another university as long as they match courses required for the certificate. Send copies of the syllabi for the courses you want transferred to the coordinator of the certificate.
- When do I meet with a program advisor?
- As soon as you have been accepted into the program you must meet with me, Donna DeGennaro, the program’s advisor. I strongly encourage you to also meet with me if you are completing courses in the program before you officially apply. Together we’ll map out the sequence of courses you wish to take on a Learning Plan. You and I will both retain a signed copy of the Learning Plan to document the courses you complete and to approve any changes that are required. You may reach me at: Donna.DeGennaro@umb.edu.
- Is a field component required?
- EDCG610 requires observations in a K-12 classroom setting. SPEG684 requires assignments that must be completed within a K-12 classroom.
