Director/Instructors

Our instructors are professionals in the field, presenting students with a vast body of knowledge and experience in addictions treatment as well as networking opportunities for practicum and future employment. We also facilitate career prospects for program graduates through our solid working relationships with addictions treatment services, vocational services, and the recovering community at large. Graduates of our program have contributed greatly to the field and to the program’s continuing success.
Dianne Doyle Pita, PhD.
Program Director
Dr. Doyle Pita is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Boston (BA, Psychology), Loyola University (MA, Clinical Psychology) and Boston University (PhD, Psychology). She is a licensed clinical psychologist, author of several texts on addictions, and has served as a faculty member of the UMass Boston A/CDTSP for over 20 years. Dr. Doyle Pita is also an adjunct faculty member of Boston University, a Boston University post-doctoral Fellow with the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation, and she maintains a private practice in the Boston area.
Kathleen M. Bambrick, LICSW
Kathleen is a licensed independent clinical social worker. She has over 20 years experience providing mental health treatment in both in-patient and out-patient settings. This experience also extends to clinical supervision, consultation, and training for both staff and interns. This expertise and interest have included therapy for adults, children, teens and families in variety of populations treatment issues including: substance abuse, dual diagnosis, and trauma treatment. Kathleen is the Manager of Training and Staff Development for South Shore Mental Health, an agency with 700 employees and programs consisting of: early intervention, 6 out-patient clinics, and residential homes. Kathleen is located at the Plymouth Campus as a CCDE instructor and practicum supervisor.
Roland J. Branconnier, MA
Roland graduated from Suffolk University with a BS in Psychology. He attended graduate school at Boston University School of Medicine where he earned an MA in Pharmacology. In 1981, He and Jonathan O. Cole, MD co-founded the Institute for Psychopharmacologic Research (IPR). IPR, a dedicated clinical research center, conducted pivotal clinical trials in Mood Disorders and Alzheimer’s Disease for over 20. Roland’s areas of expertise are protocol design, statistical analysis, and the assessment of the electrophysiological and cognitive effects of psychotropic drugs. He has extensive first author publications in peer-reviewed journals, served as a journal referee for several major scientific publications, and consulted to the National Institutes of Mental Health, major pharmaceutical companies and clinical research organizations.
Roland’s interest includes the evolutionary basis and neuroscience of addiction. In the clinic, he is directing his expertise and knowledge toward advocating for client’s rights to participate in selecting an individualized treatment regime from among evidence-based treatment options.
William Carlo, MEd, LMHC, LADC I, CEAP
Director of Modern Assistance Programs, Inc., a full service employee assistance program; Co-Director of BC-AIM, a substance abuse program for Boston College. A/CDTSP instructor (Boston & Framingham), clinical supervisor, and program coordinator (Boston campus).
John Christian, LADC I, CADAC, CCFC
John Christian is currently a Social Services Administrator for the Boston Public Health Commission. He oversees vocational rehabilitation programs, adult education, and reentry services at the Long Island Shelter. Mr. Christian is a licensed and certified alcoholism and drug abuse counselor and a certified clinical forensics counselor. He is a member of the board of SPAN, Inc., an agency dedicated to providing services to formerly incarcerated individuals. Mr. Christian is an Instructor at the University of Massachusetts Boston (Plymouth location) where he teaches Criminal Justice and Substance Abuse Treatment. He holds a BA from Harvard University and is a Masters’ candidate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Mark Collett, MA, LADC1, CADAC, CCJP
Mr. Collett has been employed with New England Aftercare Ministries, Inc. "The Bridge House", for the past seven years. There he serves criminal justice clients in recovery, and staff, as a licensed addictions counselor, criminal justice specialist and clinical supervisor. He is a graduate of UMASS/Amherst and Gordon-Conwell Seminary Boston, holding an MA in Urban Outreach, and is currently pursuing an Ed.D, in Adult Education, with Regent University. A/CDTSP Instructor and Program Advocate (Framingham Campus).
Edward Cosgrove, Ph.D.
Director of Research Administration, The Childrens Hospital, Boston, and formerly Associate Commissioner for Public Health, Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A/CDTSP instructor (Boston & Framingham campus).
Gillian Cox
I’m working as a counselor at both the Center for Addictive Behavior (CAB) detoxification unit (detox) and the Salvation Army, Harbor Lights Center, both located in Boston. I work with clients who are there for a period of six months and so I am helping them through their initial stages of recovery, onward into the stages of re-integration into everyday society. At CAB, I gather information about the individual clients and assist with placement into further treatment. I am currently pursuing my LADCII through UMB. Once I have completed my LADCII, I will be qualified to work as a licensed addictions counselor. I intend to continue working at both Salvation Army and CAB and continue my online teaching. Jennifer DeCourcey MSW, LCSW, LADCI
Ms. DeCourcey is a graduate of Boston College Graduate School of Social Work (MSW, Clinical). She is also Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and, Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADCI).

Currently, she is the Director of Victim Services at the Criminal History Systems Board. She coordinates services pursuant the Victim Bill of Rights and the Criminal Offender Record Information.

Ms. DeCourcey has also worked in the criminal justice field with offenders and police departments to combat family violence. In addition, she is a Clinical supervisor and instructor for the Alcoholism/Clinical dependency treatment service program at the University of Massachusetts Boston Campus.
William (Willy) R. Drinkwater, M.Ed, LADC-I, CADAC-II
William (Willy) has been working as an addiction specialist in the greater Boston area for over seventeen years. Among the facilities he has worked for are: CASPAR-CIC, Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, Arbour HRI, Malden Hospital, Whidden Memorial Hospital, and Somerville Hospital-ATU. While a member of the Cambridge Health Alliance, Willy was a preceptor for first year residents (Psych/Medicine) from Harvard Medical School on addiction and co-morbidity issues. He is a past listed speaker for the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) on addiction and stress issues and a current speaker for DBSA (Depression Bipolar Support Alliance). In addition, he has a private practice in Arlington at an outpatient addiction center called Right Turn. (www.right-turn.org) He is also a member of the Consumer Advisory Board at the Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, Department of Public Health. In 2007, Willy was a presenter at the 30th Annual Harvard Medical School/Cambridge Hospital, "Treating the Addictions." His topic was, "Relapse Warning Signs: Past Views, Present Views."
Ian Edwards, LICSW, LADC I
Clinical Director, Boston–area community social service program providing therapeutic home–based services to clients involved with the Department of Mental Health (DMH) and the Department of Social Services (DSS); Substance abuse consultant to DSS. A/CDTSP instructor (on-campus Boston & Framingham and online), clinical supervisor, and program coordinator (Framingham campus).
Judith Faberman, LICSW, LADCI
Director of McLean Hospital Alcohol and Drug Abuse Partial and Residential Program, private practitioner, Belmont, MA. A/CDTSP instructor (online), clinical supervisor (on-campus in Boston and online).
William Gilligan, MSW, LCSW
Mr. Gilligan has a Masters in Divinity and a Masters in Social Work. He is a training consultant to the Department of Children and Families and a trainer for the CORE Competency Training for new social workers. He also trains staff and foster/adoptive parents in the certificate program for the Department. Mr. Gilligan also teaches Child Welfare Policy in the undergraduate program at Northeastern University. He is also a training consultant to the Children’s Trust Fund and trains on Shaken Baby Syndrome. He is an instructor and practicum supervisor at UMassBoston Alcohol/Chemical Dependency Treatment Services Program, Boston Campus.
Rick Hall, MA, MSW, LICSW
Mr. Hall holds an MSW (Fordham University - New York, NY) and an MA in Criminal Justice (UMass Lowell) and is licensed as an independent clinical social worker. He is an addictions therapist and clinical supervisor in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston/Charlestown. He has expertise and clinical interest in applications of Motivational Enhancement Therapy with dual diagnosis patients as well as training and clinical interest in forensic social work. Rick is also an adjunct faculty member in the Behavioral Sciences Department at Bunker Hill Community College and North Shore Community College.
Matthew Hoffman, LADAC I, MPH, CSS, CADAC II
Mr. Hoffman teaches Psychopharmacology at the Plymouth Campus of the University of Massachusetts, Boston. He has worked in the alcohol and drug treatment field for over 20 years. He earned his Masters in Public Health at the Boston University School of Public Health, after graduating from the psychology program at U Mass Boston.
Presently, Mr. Hoffman is the Clinical Director of the Highpoint BATC Clinical Support Services (CSS), a 32-bed step-down program fron detox. The program provides case management, referral and aftercare placement for alcoholics and addicts. Matt is the Treasurer of the Recovery Home Collaborative, an organization representing 40 residential programs in Massachusetts.
Mr. Hoffman is licensed by the state as an LADC I and certified as a Clinical Supervisor, a Professional in the treatment of Co-Occurring Disorders, a Gambling Training and Treatment Specialist and a CADAC II. He serves as a Public Member of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing’s Substance Abuse Recovery Program and conducts assessment for nurses who apply for admission to that program or experience relapse while participating.
Douglas R Howard M.D.
Dr. Doug Howard graduated from Brown Univ., honors in electron microscopy and George Washington Univ., doctor of medicine. After extended training in pediatric orthopedics, and deformity of the spine I went into private practice of general orthopedics and spinal disorders. After twenty five years of active practice I have seen more than a few problems from chronic opiate use and inappropriate use of benzodiazepines. Now I would like to pass on a better understanding of the effects psychopharmacology has on the person. This course introduces the participant to the basic principles pf pharmacology, anatomy and physiology.
Malcolm MacNeil, LADCI, Med, LRC, CADAC

Kendra Marien
Kendra Marien is the Clinical Director for Inpatient Services at Spectrum Health Systems and has worked with individuals with co-occurring disorders for 15 years. Ms. Marien has a BA in Art Therapy from Emmanuel College and a MSW from Salem State College. She is licensed as an Independent Clinical Social Worker has a diplomate level certification as a Co-occurring Disorders Professional. Ms. Marien has been an Adjunct Instructor for the Next Step Program at Worcester State College for four years.

Robert L. Monahan, PhD

David Price, LMHC, LADC I
Mr. Price has worked in the mental health and substance abuse field for the past 26 years. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor. He attained his BS in Psychology from Georgia State University in 1985 and attained his Masters in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Texas in 1989. He has specialized in substance abuse treatment during his entire career. His other specialties include trauma treatment, sex offender treatment, gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender issues, marital/family therapy and adolescent therapy. He has gained additional skills in Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, trauma treatment, cognitive behavioral treatment and relapse prevention. He has been a college instructor for the past 17 years and has presented at numerous national conferences. He currently works as the Coordinator of Substance abuse Services at the Devereux School in Rutland, Massachusetts. A/CDTSP instructor (online and on-campus at all sites).

Jane J. Schwager, LADC I
Program Director, South Middlessex Opportunity Council for Serenity House, Hopkinton, MA. A traditional residential recovery home providing rehabilitative services for 35 women including 4 pregnant and post-partum who are recovering from alcohol and drug addiction. Mrs. Schwager also oversees the Rhodes House Program in Millbury, Ma. A 25 bed social model program for women. Mrs. Schwager, owns and operates J&J Sober House located in Worcester, MA. 10 single rooms for men with addiction problems. Clinical Supervisor (Framingham/Boston Campus)
Edward Wells
Edward is a practicing Masachusetts attorney having graduated from Bates College and New England School of Law. In criminal practice for 33 years he concentrated in matters involving substance abuse, treatment and recovery. He has served a a volunteer counselor at Reflections and has represented several sober houses in formative stages. He has completed the Umass A/CDTSP course and has a strong interest in forensic merger with treatment.
