Understanding and assisting substance affected families - For Professionals (from teachers to counselors)

This workshop focuses on the basic descriptions and strategies that are useful in working with substance affected families. Using the ABC-X model as a visual tool, participants will have the opportunity to identify the issues that substance affected families face. They will also be introduced to Reilly’s characteristic patterns of interaction in substance affected families.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify issues that substance affected families face using the ABC-X model.
  • Identify patterns of interaction in affected families using Reilly’s schema.
  • Develop strategies to identify and address these patterns in their students or clients.
  • Utilize these strategies to engage more effectively with these families.

Worshop Leader: Mara Briere

Mara is the president of the Points to Ponder Company, a Parent Education/Staff Development Company. She is a Family Life Education Specialist, MA Certified Elementary Teacher, Certified "Becoming a Love and Logic Parent Program" Facilitator/Mentor; Qualified MBTI Administrator, and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor. She is employed by Wayside Youth and Family Support Network as Home Base Clinician. Her primary area of interest is improving family relationships and community involvement.
